Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is the ability to effectively manage one’s emotions. Having a high EQ does not mean you don’t get emotional, it simply means you are able to manage your emotions, they don’t mange you. This is self-regulation. When someone says or does something that triggers an over-reaction, they’ve pushed one of your buttons. Distress tolerance gives you the capacity to respond in a professional way rather than over-reacting. It’s hard to think rationally when your feelings are intense. It’s hard to work from a place of fear and anger which is usually why one overreacts.
